Book Review: Pairing Paws: Dog Breeds and Their Spirit Wines

Pairing Paws: Dog Breeds and Their Spirit WinesPairing Paws: Dog Breeds and Their Spirit Wines by Michele Gargiulo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I cracked into this coffee table-sized book with the beautiful cover, but by the time I’d read the last pairing – Yorkshire Terriers and Riesling – I’d gained a new outlook on both our canine pals and possibly the most classic beverage of all time.

Author Michele Gargiulo knows her stuff – she works in the wine industry, and she loves dogs. She mentions that she’s read plenty of ‘pairing’ books focused on matching food and wine, but those books were missing something she wanted to highlight. Fun! And this book has puppy-piles of that.

Full Disclaimer: I’m a… cat person. I didn’t grow up with dogs. Sure, I like my friends dogs, but at the end of the day, I hear purring at home, not barking. However, after learning more about the temperament and personalities of over fifty dog breeds, and cooing over the amazing photography that truly captures their heart and soul, my heart’s been won by at least a dozen of them.

Each dog/wine pairing page features dogs found in shelters, with lots of help from Street Tails Animal Rescue. And the author is making sure that half the profits from sales of this book go to shelters and animal rescues in the Philadelphia area.
