Book Review: Dare vs the Doll
Dare vs the Doll by Si Clarke
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This very short story is sassy, weird and oddly cute. The dialog is giggle-worthy sass, and the situation is so far removed from the realm of possibility that you just can’t help but roll with it.
The author mentions that she set a personal challenge for herself to write this story with no mention of gender whatsoever. I think she met that challenge well, as the story flowed nicely without feeling like it was side-stepping the issue. In fact, I’d enjoy reading more books that didn’t include gender references.
There’s a formidable amount of backmatter, which collectively is longer than the story itself. This is not a criticism, in fact, as an author myself I think I’ll take a page out of Si Clarke’s book (so to speak) and create what I’m going to start calling a “Book Business Card” for myself, too.
